Feast
NL, 2021, DCP, 84 min.

In Feast, perpetrators, victims and their onlookers get entangled in a dramatic reconstruction of the Groningen HIV case, the story of three men who drugged other men during a series of sex parties and then injected them with their own HIV-infected blood.

The source text of the film is Plato's SYMPOSIUM, which depicts a banquet attended by a group of notable men. During this gathering, seven of the attendees engage in a playful contest in which they try to find the most convincing definition of Eros, or truth, or beauty, or love.

Feast is the result of the collision of these two narratives, which initially appear to be each others antitheses, culminating in a story about power and submission, the reversibility of the truth and the desire to come home. The film is told in seven sequences, recorded by seven different directors of photography, and in which documentary and fiction strategies merge unnoticed and clash dramatically.

Feast premiered at International Film Festival Rotterdam in the Tiger competition and is currently touring the festival circuit. Theatrical screenings are slated for 2022 and a deal with my favourite VOD service is in the making. See below for current and past screening dates.

Feast Wins Best Feature Film at Milano Festival Mix Festival.

From the jury report:

For the ability to deal with a disturbing news event in an original way. The film deconstructs the case into thematic and formal blocks, with a conceptual force that can also lead to poetic results.

Feast Wins Best International Feature Film at Monterrey International Film Festival

From the jury report:

For its originality in the combination of narrative elements, it is a refreshing film in the possibility of film language. Its testimonies are hypnotic and at the same time confrontational to the viewer. It takes us to a cinema that is difficult to find, which we decided to bet on.

Mexican YouTube reviewers Cine Aparte dedicated a full episode to the film:

Feast wins Prix Loridan-Ivens-CNAP, award for best debut feature film at Cinéma du Réel, Paris FR

From the jury report:

The Loridan-Ivens / Cnap prize is awarded annually to a debut feature film from both International and French Selections. This year, the 2021 jury is pleased to award the astonishingly masterful film Feast by Tim Leyendekker, which takes a boldly constructed approach to a particularly painful story. The prize acknowledges Feast as a film that courageously surmounts obstacles without sacrificing its rigorous formal research.
